Details

Magento 2 remote images let you add product images by URL instead of uploading image files to your store. Use the product form, product imports or the REST API to link each picture to its source.

Images are shown from their URL everywhere in your store and are never copied into pub/media. Remote Images is a digital download for the Community, Enterprise and Magento Cloud editions.

Key features of Magento 2 remote images

  • Image URLs in product form – Add an image URL directly in the product form so the picture appears without a file upload.
  • Support for product imports – Import products with image URLs so catalog pictures can be added in bulk.
  • Image URLs through the REST API – Send image URLs through the REST API to add product images from your own systems.
  • Images served from their source – Each image is displayed from its URL everywhere in the store, so pub/media does not fill with copies.
  • Edition choice – Pick the Community, Enterprise or Magento Cloud edition that matches your Magento installation.

Change Log

Version 1.0.1 – October 25, 2026

Fixed

  • With asynchronous image resizing, saving a product no longer queues an "Image resize" task (and an admin notice) for each remote image.

Version 1.0.0 – October 25, 2026

New

  • *Add Images from URL* in the product form gallery:
  • URL fields, adding several URLs by pasting them;
  • a check that each URL answers with an image, without downloading it;
  • errors per URL, and no duplicates.
  • Remote images are shown from their URL everywhere and never stored in pub/media:
  • product lists, product page gallery, mini cart, cart and checkout, admin grid and gallery;
  • REST, GraphQL and sitemap.
  • Roles, labels, positions, hidden images, removing and *Save & Duplicate* work as for uploaded images.
  • Product import:
  • image URLs stay links ("Images From URLs" per import, and a setting for imports through the API);
  • re-imports do not add images twice.
  • Product export writes the image URLs back.
  • REST API:
  • extension_attributes.remote_url (or the URL as file) on media gallery entries for products and /V1/products/{sku}/media;
  • responses include the URL.
  • Optional image CDN URL template with {url}, {url_encoded}, {width} and {height}.
  • Content Security Policy: hosts of remote images are allowed as image sources.
  • Image resizing skips remote images.
  • Settings:
  • https only (http optional) and allowed hosts;
  • URL checks, with private network addresses refused.
  • bin/magento techimprovement:remote-images:check finds broken image URLs and their products.
